In a 1972 Wall Street Journal article, a Philip Morris Vice President was quoted saying, “If our product is harmful, we’ll stop making it.”

We want to know...Isn’t 14,400 deaths daily proof enough?

Every six seconds someone on the planet dies from a tobacco-related disease. That adds up to 14,400 people every day! Documents show that for decades, the tobacco industry has known that their products are harmful. But Big Tobacco still continues to market its products worldwide.

It’s time to do something about Big Tobacco’s efforts to sell a deadly and addictive product. Here are a couple of ideas to get you started:

  1. Get educated. Discover the truth about how the tobacco industry deceives the public and targets youth. These Web sites have some great information: www.hhs.state.ne.us/tfn/, www.kickbuttsday.org, www.thetruth.com, legacy.library.ucsf.edu.
  2. Get involved with a group that is active in the fight against Big Tobacco. If there isn't a group nearby, you can start your own by holding a meeting to discuss goals and issues. Then you can start planning activism events. For help in getting started, call No Limits at 1-866-394-8336.
  3. Raise local awareness by letting people know what Big Tobacco is up to. Check out some activism ideas here.
  4. Talk with decision makers—school board members, city councilmen, a state senator, or a congressional representative—these are the people who make policies that affect you. Let them know that you support issues like tobacco-free campuses, raising the tax on tobacco products, and funding for comprehensive tobacco-prevention and cessation programs.
