April 22, 2009Governor Heineman signs new bills into lawCigar bars will be exempt from the upcoming statewide smoking ban. Governor Dave Heineman signed that into law Wednesday along with 2 other bills.
Under the cigar bar legislation only cigars can be smoked, not cigarettes.
Cigar bars are classified as any bar that has 10 percent of its revenue coming from cigar sales.
The smoking ban goes into affect in June, but the cigar bar exemption does not kick in until September.
That means for those 3 months no smoking of any kind, not even cigars, will be allowed.
The Governor also signed a bill that will require registration, certification and background checks of sports agents. It is meant to punish agents who offer cash to athletes to sign with them.
Also, you will no longer have to pay double fines for speeding in a work zone. That is if workers are not present. If they are you will still have to pay double. The law went into effect Wednesday.
